Fantastic First Weekend!

Date Posted: 1/25/2019

All across the east coast teams were competing this past MLK weekend, Academy was no exception. With 32 teams competing in Raleigh and Richmond, there was a lot to be proud of.

The club’s national teams headed downtown to compete in the City of Oaks tournament at the Raleigh Convention Center. With fields featuring the best of the Carolina region and surrounding states, there were a lot of fun matches featuring former teammates from school and past club teams. After day 1, Academy was 39-12 with 14 out of 17 teams still fighting for Gold. Day 2 proved to be even more of a challenge, great competition as our teams fought in the top half and 7 finished well enough to end up in the Gold bracket on the final day.

As the morning progressed, and our teams got deeper in the brackets, the medals came rolling in for Academy. First was 13 Diamond who upset Triangle 13 Black in straight sets after losing to them earlier in the weekend. 12 Diamond was next to follow, going undefeated against all 12 teams in their division. 14 Diamond finished a respectable 2nd place after a hard fought weekend, and 15 Diamond closed out the weekend with another 1st place finish.

Up in Richmond Virginia, the excitement continued. Our Regional+ teams fought at the Monument City Classic – a club favorite we love starting our season at. Monument typically features local Carolina Region, Virginia, and Maryland clubs – a nice change of pace from the clubs these teams normally feature in their regional events. 25-19 was the club’s record after day 1, and they were ready to compete on day 2.

Harder competition followed and there were 3 teams that ended up in Gold on the final day – 16 Pearl, 14 Pearl, and 13 Jade. 2 teams took home hardware, 16 Pearl was undefeated leading up to the final day, with a win against Carolina Chaos – it was on to the finals. Falling to WCV 16 National, 16 Pearl had an amazing 2nd place finish for their first tournament. 13 Jade saw a similar fate, undefeated for the first two days, losing in 3 to CFV 13 Teal but ended up taking BRVA 13-2 in 3 to finish 3rd!
