ROAD CLOSURES AND GRTC BUS DETOURS DUE TO SECOND AMENDMENT RALLY

A rally is planned for Monday 8am-2pm at the Virginia State Capitol. While an unknown number of participants are expected, we do not anticipate impact to the area immediately surrounding the convention center.  The link below shows road closures so that you may plan your travel accordingly.  The convention is reserving their parking deck for volleyball participants and will post signs at the entrance. The convention center and RVC have met with law enforcement to minimize impact and we have taken the step of adding additional security .

We are continuously monitoring and staying in close touch with local law enforcement regarding the rally at the Capitol planned on Monday.  At this time, we are told activity around the convention center is not expected. Should the situation change,  we will evaluate what steps may be needed to provide the best and safest experience possible for those attending our tournament. We have extra security who will be closely monitoring entrances. We have multiple armed security personnel including a Richmond Police Officer to assist the convention center security, who will be stationed at the entrance doors of the convention center.  The number of doors used for entry on Monday at the convention center will be limited to the entrance on 3rd and Marshall St. and the entrance from the parking deck. Convention center parking will be limited to volleyball participants on Monday as well.

We have been assured by the Richmond Police Department  that every precaution has been taken to contain the rally at the Capitol.

NOTICE

On Monday, January 20, 2020, the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, from 8:00am – 2:00pm there is a rally scheduled to take place on the grounds of the Virginia State Capitol approximately six blocks east of the Greater Richmond Convention Center on the south (other) side of Broad Street.

The purpose of the rally is to voice opposition to firearm legislation currently being considered by Virginia’s general assembly. It is legal to open carry a firearm in most public areas in Virginia. You may witness individuals in the downtown area carrying a firearm.

There is no threat that has been directed towards the volleyball tournament or the convention center.  Should any issues arise at or near the rally that might impact us, the GRCC may implement its emergency procedures to include, but not be limited to, lock down or shelter in place. You would be provided instructions through the Center’s Public Address system.

We are posting this notice for informational purposes.  We suggest you avoid the State Capitol area on Monday and give yourself some extra time to arrive, park and enter the facility.
